About DoveLewis
RIDE WITH US TO SUPPORT DOVELEWIS!
DoveLewis is Portland’s only non-profit emergency animal hospital open 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Working alongside the area’s talented veterinarian community, they care for animals needing critical care, provide educational programs and community outreach.
DoveLewis is American Animal Hospital Association accredited, an organization that recognizes high standards of veterinary excellence. Only 15% of veterinary hospitals in the United States and Canada are recognized for their high standards and are accredited through AHAA.
DoveLewis’s highly-skilled professionals are dedicated to improving the condition of animals needing emergency and critical care, strengthening the ties with, and extending the reach of, the veterinary community and promoting the well-being of animals and the human-animal bond throughout the community at large.
DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital was founded in 1973 by Mr. A.B. Lewis, in cooperation with the Portland Veterinary Medical Association, and in memory of Mr. Lewis’ late wife, Dove. Dove Lewis and A.B. were breeders of Standard Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, and Shih Tzus. Dove and A.B. ran the family kennel and dog grooming business (very upscale for its time), and because of her talent and special way with animals, people from across the country sent their dogs to Dove.
Dove Lewis’ legacy of loving all animals, and promoting the human-animal bond lives on in the people who love and support our hospital and community programs. She is a true symbol of the human-animal bond, and the DoveLewis mission. In June of 1992, DoveLewis opened its doors around the clock to treat animals requiring emergency and critical care, 24 hours a day.
